This report is the result of the designing of a recycling bin intended for use at petrol stations. The employer Återvinningslösningar i Norr AB have earlier experience from the market of recycling with their product Sortify, which is a recycling bin intended for use at public outdoor environments. The project was at first supposed to result in a product for public indoor environments but twisted when the employer saw great potential in developing one of the concepts intended for petrol stations.At the beginning a pre-study was made to create a good knowledge base for the rest of the project. Studies were made about recycling and separation at source and the market for waste bins were examined. The result from these studies points at that many people thinks waste bin are nasty and ugly and that the maintenance of them many times brings less satisfactory sub operations. From the pre-study a specification of requirements was made which acted as basis for the rest of the project.A creative phase started where many solutions were generated for different sub problems. This was made with help by creative methods and a workshop, where external people got to contribute to produce the quantity of solutions that was needful. Poor solutions were screened away and different concepts were arranged. These concepts were assessed against each other and the desires from the specifications of requirements and by consulting the employer one concept was chosen to develop further. This concept acted as basis for three new concepts and again only one concept proceeded through the design process.In the further development the hatch that has to be opened to throw waste and the mechanism for change of bags was improved. A functional model was created to verify that the hatch could work satisfactory. This model was also used to decide the height of the recycling bin together with a statistic examination of human heights.The result was a recycling bin of module based type, which means that the costumer decides how many fractions it will use. The design is closed which grants good fire safety. The hatch got two opening details, one handle for pulling and one plate for pushing. This gives an opportunity to chose if one of the details is dirty, and in that way the user can stay clean. The hatch is also designed so that it closes itself after opening and the plate is angled which gives a good place for placing symbols.The result is presented with 3D-rendered pictures and CAD-drawings are available for possible further development and manufacturing.
