Abstract [en]
Group piano teaching is a rare phenomenon and therefore interesting to study. Traditionally piano teaching has, for a number of reasons, been conducted individually. The following survey consists of qualitative interviews with five music teachers - four piano teachers and one guitar teacher - and nine students of piano. Aside from interviews, three unstructured, naturalistic observations has been performed during three group piano lessons. Piano students from each class were interviewed.Guitar tuition has a longer tradition of group teaching and it was therefore deemed to be valuable to examine whether there are similarities between group teaching for the different instruments. The study shows that group teaching has many benefits of and few disadvantages. An advantage of group teaching is that the students consider it to be more fun and social than private lessons. In addition, it is more economical and administratively easier for teachers. A disadvantage is that the skills of the pupils within the group will often vary, which the teachers need to handle. The study also reveals that when using group teaching it is appropriate to plan the tuition by semester, have level differentiated teaching materials and two teachers per group of ten to twelve pupils.
