Handrail height of spiral stairs

Abstract [en]

Stairs, in general, are well known and thoroughly studied subject, but there is almost no scientific material available about spiral stairs. They are, however, widely used in homes, industrial sites and public buildings mainly as emergency exits but also as main stairs. The lack of scientific papers influenced the form of the strongly. It became necessary to study features of straight stairs, and then interpret the implications for spiral stairs. It is clear that, from the usability point of view, spiral stairs can not compete with straight stairs. Anyhow, there seems to be no difference between the two types of stairs regarding safety of the users. Fitting trial yielded an estimate 105 cm for the preferred handrail height for spiral stairs for Finnish adult male users. Since only twenty participants were involved, the reliability of the results can be questioned. In the future, female participants should be included in the experiment. It is suggested, that the preferred handrail height actually is the optimal handrail height for any user population, because the preferred handrail height is the most comfortable handrail height, thus being the height that most efficiently encourages people to use handrails when ever they are using stairs. This change in behaviour, in turn, should be observable as a reduction in stair accident rates and also as reduced severity of stair accidents. Combining the results from the fitting trial and participants’ anthropometric data made it possible to develop a model for predicting the optimal handrail height for other male user populations. It was discovered that stature seems to have a strong relationship between handrail height preference.
