Overall equipment effectiveness: a diagnostic study of productivity improvements at Polyaire Pty Ltd

Abstract [en]

Polyaire is one of the leading manufacturers of air-conditioning products in Australia and was established in 1973. At present there are 292 persons employed at the company, 21 of them at PM4, where outlets of aluminium and sheet metal are manufactured. PM 4 is the part of the production that this study focuses on. Apart from the manufacturing in Gepps Cross, Adelaide, Polyaire has branches situated in 5 states in Australia. The production in PM 4 has recently been moved from another location and the layout has not been given as much consideration as needed. Currently, the layout is unplanned regarding the flow of people, material and products through the plant and no one in an executive position has had time to learn the different manufacturing procedures. The objective with this study is to identify possibilities for productivity improvements with emphasis on layout, material handling and production flow. Management and organisational issues will also be taken into consideration as well as improvement of the work environment. The outcome of the study is a description of the current situation, an analysis of the same and an improvement road map. The road map includes short, medium and long-term activities to improve productivity. The main recommendations to Polyaire are: • New layout and balancing of the manufacturing of the products to reduce lead-time. • Implement Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for all workstations, job descriptions and give training to all employees. • Improvement of work positions with worktables and trolleys and overall work environment with rubber mats and sound absorbing panels. • Quantified cycle times, sales forecasts, Bills of Materials (BOMs) and inventory status to achieve a better planned production with control of raw materials, manufacturing and stock levels. After implementation of the short and medium-term concept emphasis for future work will be on management of the company. Quality certification and all actions mentioned above will be important to achieve before an automated solution becomes the major interest for further expansion of Polyaire. Implementing the short-term concept will render an increase in productivity by 10 percent and a lead-time reduction of 30 percent.
