Design Study of an Ocean Pool for the World's Largest Sailing Ship
2011 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis project is for a Masters degree in Industrial Design at Luleå Technical University. The project was carried out at Star Clippers, a company with three sailing passenger cruise ships. Plans to build a new forth ship “SC-4” is currently on the drawing board. To expand the passenger’s experience, the new ship will have an “Ocean pool” at the Marina Platform in the aft of the ship. This will let the guests swim in the ocean, safe from currents and other dangers of the seas. The aim of the thesis was to find the best solution for the Ocean pool using Industrial design methods. The design should follow the theme of the ship and be functional and safe. The project looked to the aesthetics and the best solution for the layout, storing and mounting/dismounting.The result is a submergible rectangular pool 8m x 5m with a 0.6m peripheral teak deck. The inside swimming area is 6.7m x 3.8m, with a semi-coarse net to keep jellyfish and other dangers out but still allow water to flow freely. The pool is hinged to the Marina Platform and kept floating by its buoyancy as well as two wires connected to the aft of the ship. It has a module system for hand rails and equipment that can be changed to different circumstances. The Ocean pool also provides docking of Sports boats, ladders, a shower and davits for lifting heavy items. The Pool is mounted and dismounted by an extendable traverse in the ceiling of the Sports Area and securely stored in the ceiling when not in use.
