Abstract [en]

As organizations put more and more effort into keeping down production costs and minimize waste it has become increasingly important to make sure that CAD files maintain a high quality before they are released to manufacturing. The time of each designer is also increasingly more valuable and many designers have a heavy workload, which can result in CAD files that are not reviewed as much as necessary to ensure a certain level of quality. Some types of validation can also be very time consuming. The desire to keep production costs to a minimum has resulted in the development of automated tools for validation, where one example is the Check-Mate tool that is delivered with the CAD software Siemens NX. Check-Mate is a validation tool developed with the purpose of reviewing models and designs. This is accomplished either by using the out of the box checks that are delivered with Check-Mate or by programming custom checks specifically for the organization where the tool will be used. By using Check-Mate a company can increase the chance that certain rules and standards are followed by the designers as well as minimize the risk that errors made in the designs remain undetected when the model is released for manufacturing, where the cost of correcting those errors can become very expensive. The purpose of this thesis has been to examine how Check-Mate can be used at the tooling department of Gestamp HardTech in Luleå. Custom checks specifically developed for replacing or supplementing the existing validation document has also been developed. During work on these checks much effort has been put into making the checks as robust and reliable as possible. Effort has also been put into making the program code as easy to understand as possible, should Gestamp HardTech choose to continue development after the completion of this thesis. As Check-Mate has not been part of the CAD courses given my LTU, the project started by studying the documentation that is delivered with NX regarding this area. This was combined with exercises using the self-study material CAST, along with other exercises and studies of external material on this subject. This was done to get a basic understanding of Check-Mate that could be used as a foundation during the rest of the project. Since all checks that have been developed during work on this thesis are unique in one or more ways, this method has been revisited several times during the project to gather knowledge on how a specific check can be solved. Other work during the project has been development of checks and profiles, implementation, and gathering of knowledge regarding what rules and standards that exist in the company where the thesis has been conducted. The result of this thesis is a number of checks and profiles that fully or partially can replace parts of the existing validation document that currently is the basis of all design validation at Gestamp HardTech. Three different concepts for how to implement Check-Mate has also been developed, along with two different concepts for storage of the check-files.
