Geographic Internet services - architecture

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this Master Thesis is to investigate how to use Internet technology to supply Internet based geographic services through a portal and a metadata catalog, and also to find a way to combine local data with data hosted by customers. Since Metria build most of their applications using different ESRI products, they wanted to, if possible, solve these problems using features in ESRI's products. For the metadata catalog the natural choice was to use the Metadata Service in ArcIMS. The result is a metadata catalog, with some defects. The two main problems have been the use of meters as map unit and the use of an editor that follows the ISO standard when editing the metadata. The problem to combine data from different hosts, has not been realized or tested. The report presents a theory on how this could be solved by building a Web service.
