Simulation of draft tube

Abstract [en]

This research has been made on flow properties of the elbow draft tube. The draft tube is situated just after the runner in a turbine. It is made of a conical diffuser, an elbow and a straight diffuser. The role of the draft tube is to convert kinetic energy into pressure with a minimum of losses. The development in simulation techniques should be of great help to design and optimize new components in the hydropower system. The tool used for this research is Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), which may contribute to increase the draft tube efficiency to a low price compared to model testing. The present thesis focuses on the flow in an elbow draft tube. It investigates the influence of the grid quality on the simulation by investigation of the pressure recovery. Furthermore some simulations have been made by varying the inlet turbulent kinetic, since this parameter has not been accurately measured.
