Retrospective study on industrial accidents in Alexandria Sodium Carbonate Company over five years (1998- 2002)

Abstract [en]

Alexandria Sodium Carbonate Company has maintenance, repair and production departments with workers in different specializations. Those workers are liable to be injured in accidents during work, on the way to work or back home. The present study was conducted as a retrospective study of industrial accidents during the period 1998-2002. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and causes of industrial accidents and present recommendations to reduce the accidents in the company. The total number of work force during the study period (1998-2002) was 15650 workers. A total of 853 workers were injured, the accident frequency rate was 25, while the accident severity rate was 185.5. The groups with the highest prevalence of accidents were workers with basic or moderate education (77%), workers below 35 years of age (63%), and single workers (58%). The main causes of injuries occurred in the workshops (75%), were slips and falls (39%), were due to falling or flying objects (23%), due to wrong working methods (29%) or due to carelessness behavior (27%). Most accidents occurred during July and August (11%, 10% respectively). The upper limb (34%) and lower limbs (30%) represented the most common injury sites, and contusion (48%): wound (17%) and burn (15%) represented the most frequent types of injuries.
