Translation of English idioms into Swedish as seen in the movie "You've got mail"
2003 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The essay aims to describe how English idioms are translated into Swedish in television and movies. The essay starts with a discussion on translation theory and the nature of idioms. It was found that idioms are conceptual to their nature, and not purely linguistic. It was also found that a string has to fulfil certain requirements to be an idiom. These requirements are institutionalisation, lexicogrammatical fixedness and finally non-compositionality.The essay continues with an analyse of 15 idioms gathered from a movie called "You've got mail". The English idioms were analysed, along with their Swedish translations.
