Previous research show that throughout history there has been differences in sports journalism regarding male and female sports. Most often the research show that male sports is dominating the sport pages in terms of quantity. However, there are other differences regarding the portrayal of the athletes if you study the sport pages. The purpose with this study is to examine differences and similarities of how team sports from the male side and the female side are portrayed in sport reporting in two Swedish newspapers from a qualitative perspective. Since it’s a well researched subject in the regard of quantity.The rhetorical analysis is a central part of the study where we examine one Swedish newspaper called ”Norrländska Socialdemokraten” (NSD). The focus of this study will be language use. In total we examine 38 sport reports from the two newspapers. Our question formulation focus on if there is differences and, if yes, which differences there are in the sport reports in male as well as female team sports. The result can be divided into five different parts. The first part we found examples of the writers using more statistics and facts to build their reliability, or logos. The second part shows how the newspaper make use of metaphors. The third part displays the articles regarding men’s sport writers tend to use a tougher language compared to the writers that wrote the reports about female sports. The forth result show that the language in the newspaper maintained the same style regarding female and male athlete representation. The fifth and final result show that there are differences in how the writers use positive words. In this case we have noticed that the reporting of male sports and athletes in many instances include more glorifying words, on the other half the female sports and athletes are portrayed like ordinary athletes.
