Abstract [en]

The art of translation is one that involves a number of problems. Even the translation of an easy reding children's book creates difficulties even for the most skillfull translator. To translate a text does not merely mean to transfer a word from one language to another. What is more important, is the transportation of the meaning between the languages. To be able to do this, certain changes in the text might be required. The responsability of the translator is to preserv the SL in meaning, structure and level of difficulty. This study of the tranlation of Astrid Lindgren's Emil in the soup tureen into English, made by Lilian Seaton, is an excellent example of a translation well done.
