Abstract [en]
The number of calls to the ambulance has increased sharply. Nurses are at high risk for mental and physical injuries and illness at work, and at a higher risk for burnout. The purpose of the study was to describe how specialist nurses in the ambulance reported that their health in relation to ambulance transports. A qualitative interview study with eight specialist nurses in the ambulance was conducted in which a semi-structured interview guide was used. A qualitative thematic content analysis was used for the analysis. This resulted in one theme; experience of health despite aspects of illness and seven categories; Staggered mealtimes affect dietary intake; night sleep is disturbed; experienced stress; inability to process ambulance runs; need for training but not having the time; deteriorated working environment due to the need for rest; need of recovery, but not having the time. The results of our study showed similarities with other studies regarding aspects of illness. Our results differ, however, because illness is shown in other studies but not in ours. Reduced patient safety in relation to aspects of illness are also seen. A conclusion that can be drawn is that the employer should put in resources to reduce aspects of illness as these can lead to decreased patient safety. Further research should be done on the aspects of illness specialist nurses in the ambulance experience to reduce or prevent these and increase patient safety. This can be done through studies that examine organizational changes that can be made for the ambulance to counter aspects of illness, and also studies focusing on how patient safety can be affected in the ambulance.
