Characterization of charge modified pulps by polyelectolyte absorption

Abstract [en]

The aim of this work was to determine the topochemical location of charged groups in mechanically and chemically treated kraft pulps. Polyelectrolyte titrations were used to determine the location of the charges on the fibers and conductometric titration was used to determine the total charge. The charge ratio, i.e. the ratio between adsorbed polymer charges at the plateau-level in the adsorption isotherms and the total charge on the fibres, was then plotted as a function of the molecular weight of poly-DADMAC. Results showed increased adsorption with decreasing molecular wight. Mechanical beating incrased the adsprption. Surface carboxymethylated pulp shows in adsorption the same results as bulk carboxymethylated pulp. The surface charge and the difference between poly-DADMAC and polybrene are also discussed.
