Study of the feasibility of an x-ray free electron laser with a CLIC beam

Abstract [en]

This is a study of the feasibility of an X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) with the beam from the linear accelerator CLIC, that is currently under development at CERN. An electron beam of high quality and energy is needed to operate an FEL in the X-ray regime. Such beams can be produced with linacs, and CLIC might be a suitable source. CERN and some theory of FELs are presented before the procedure of simulations, the results, and the conclusions. It is shown that the nominal CLIC setup is not suitable as an FEL driver. Neither are relatively simple modifications to this setup enough to make it so, since the high-frequency accelerating structures of the main linac are not suited to create a beam of the right qualities.
