Abstract [en]

Quality and productivity are important definitions in the paper- and paperboard industry. Iggesund Paperboard Workington has created a database containing quality control data and images of quality- and production problems. The purpose is to document when problems occurred and to prevent their return. The disadvantages with the database are the lack of accessibility, the structure and the amount of information. To be strong on the market it is also very important to improve the quality on already existing products. When trying to fulfil customers’ production requirements, the company can get problems in the production. For example problems can occur when producing a particular product. This product is specially made for customers using a 9.6 microns laser for date marking and is the only product containing the coating pigment causing problem. This Master thesis has two parts. The first part discusses how to rebuild the database by creating a better structure with increasing accessibility and more information. The second part reports an investigation of seven alternative coating pigments for the production and their effects on the laser coding with a 9.6 microns laser. In the report there are detailed descriptions and microscopic images on the laser codings made on different surfaces to facilitate further comparison with other coating pigments. All used material and methods are described and further work has been suggested for both the database and the laser coding project. The report is confidential and will only be available after 31st of October 2003.
