Community television: development of an interactive IP-based broadcaster and receiver

Abstract [en]

This thesis presents an interactive, real-time, IP-based, audio/video broadcasting system, which allows content to be controlled by the viewing community using a voting system. The system is intended for multicast enabled networks such as the Swedish University Network SUNET. Each channel is viewable at full screen with the same quality as is expected with ordinary broadcast television. To be able to deliver high quality content to the clients in a scalable manner MPEG-4 is used for the video encoding. Darwin Streaming Server from Apple Computer, Inc. is used to stream the videos to a multicast group, which the clients connect to using the Session Description Protocol. The thesis describes the Community Television application consisting of a video server, a client and a vote server. These components are all written in Java and the communication between them is sent using multicast to allow for scalability, except the voting messages from the client to the vote server. In addition, the thesis gives an analysis of the system in terms of cost and scalability.
