Distributed objects in a heterogeneous environment

Abstract [en]

This Masters thesis investigates the possibilities in communication between objects on different platforms. We use both literature and practical examples to evaluate our theories. Most objects on Unix are CORBA objects and on Windows/NT they are DCOM objects. The thesis contains two parts: The first part highlights fundamental techniques, CORBA and DCOM, and the difference between them. The second part contains three methods to integrate these objects: bridge CORBA and DCOM, use DCOM objects on Unix or use CORBA objects on Windows. The advantage of using DCOM/CORBA bridge interworking is that it gives the ability for one object system to use objects in a different object system. The interworking combines the advantages and strengths of each technology. The advantage of executing COM on Unix is that an existing COM object easily can be moved to Unix without any large code change. For a system with several platforms that do not use any object system at the moment, CORBA is an excellent choice.
