Design and concept development of a multi navigational outdoor instrument

Abstract [en]

Silva Sweden AB is, since the early 1930´s, a developer and manufacturer of outdoor and marine products, such as compasses, GPS navigators, headlamps, binoculars etc. Since the start this two product segments have constantly been growing and new products have been developed. This master thesis deals with the design and concept development of a multi navigational outdoor instrument, which satisfy the customers’ needs and demands. The result ends up in a concept suggestion of a product and its functions, visualized with a mock up model. The method used in the project has been the principals of the Product Development Process, where the three first phases in this process have been applied and used in the developing work. Phase 0, Product Planning - The aim with this phase is to collect background material about the product. In this project the background information was collected from conversations, market survey, benchmarking and a market analyse. This data will be the base for the further development phase. Phase 1, Concept Development – In this phase the concepts are generated, developed, visualized and screened. Phase 2, System– Level Design – The chosen concept is decomposed and refined in detail, to be developed into a final concept of the product. The research phase resulted in a decision to go further and develop a handheld multi navigational product with the main functions: electronic compass, altimeter/ barometer and GPS navigator. In the following concept development phase, brainstorming and brainwriting sessions were held, which resulted in a large amount of ideas and sketches. These sketches were developed into four concepts, which were discussed and evaluated in the project group. Ideas and concepts are combined and slowly the final concept takes form. The final concept is visualized with a 3D computer model and with a real life mock up model. The project resulted in a concept of a handheld multi navigational outdoor instrument that will provide its user with all necessary navigational and environmental data. The instrument will be equipped with the functions: electronic compass, altimeter, weather data and GPS navigator. The instrument will be powered with a 3V lithium battery, which has good performance and will be good for approximately 10 h of constant GPS navigation. The main markets would be trekking, ski touring, climbing, hunting etc.
