Hydraulic control valve in a wet clutch for AWD: modeling and simulation

Simulation is an important tool for manufacturers of complex products such as mechanical systems. Simulation models of the products can make the development of the products cheaper and less time consuming. However, to be able to simulate the whole product often detailed simulation models of the smaller components in the system are needed. Haldex Limited Slip Coupling is one such product. The coupling is an AWD (All Wheel Drive) system which is used in passenger cars from Volkswagen, Volvo and Ford, among other manufacturers. This system makes the torque transmitted to the rear wheels easy to control while the front wheels always are engaged. The torque distribution to the rear wheels is controlled by a hydraulic control valve, which is a very important component for describing the function of the whole clutch. This control valve is simulated in this master’s thesis. In a modern car there are also other control systems such as ABS and ESP, which will help the driver to keep the vehicle on the road, and this coupling will work in cooperation with these other control systems. The reaction time of the coupling, and therefore the valve has to be very short. This makes the dynamic properties of the valve very significant. The model of the valve can be used in simulations of the dynamic pressure response for a certain in-signal from the control system. Results from the simulation show the dynamic behavior of a control valve at different temperatures. The design of the valve is also easy to change in the model, which makes it useful to predict how the design could be changed to get a desired behavior. This is useful to make virtual tests before expensive hardware component tests will be carried out in the laboratory. To get an idea of the total function of a coupling, mounted in a car, a simplified model of a whole vehicle is built. The engagement process for the rear wheels, when the front wheels start to spin, is investigated for different temperatures.
