Positioning is a technique that is used more and more. In some cases GPS (Global Positioning System) may be replaced with GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) positioning. The advantage with mobile positioning through the GSM network compared with GPS positioning is that GSM enables indoor positioning. Another benefit with GSM positioning is that almost everyone has his/her own cellular. GSM positioning is today a complement to the GPS method. With an improved accuracy, GSM positioning might become a commercial success. There are many possibilities with a good positioning service. One GSM positioning system is MPS (Mobile Positioning System), which is developed by Ericsson. This system has a potential to grow rapidly, especially since location services become more and more interesting for the public. However, the system of today has an accuracy ranging from hundred meters up to 35 km in some cases. Today, the MPS only gives information about which cell the mobile is located in and in some cases also a TA-value (Timing Advance). The TA-value gives a better understanding of the distance between the BTS (Base Transceiver Station) and the MS (Mobile Station). Position provided by the MPS is a quite large area. To be able to offer better location services it is beneficial to investigate methods that might decrease this area and at the same time give a better experienced accuracy with MPS. The purpose with this thesis is to examine the accuracy of the current MPS and to study methods that may enhance the experienced accuracy of the MPS. If the investigation results in any methods increasing the experienced accuracy, these methods may be implemented in Mobilaris’ platform Pacific Ocean.
