Market segmentation and user requirement analysis with alternative information sources
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on segmentation and user requirement analysis and how this can be done with alternative ways of gathering information. To be able to get a picture of the problem area the American wireless data market has been the focus of this study. This market has been segmented and the user requirements have been analyzed on the bases of information gathered from companies in the market such as infrastructure, modem and terminal manufacturers as well as operators. This has been tried as a cheaper and easier way of gathering information, as an alternative way as opposed to the usual way of gathering the data from the end users. The research was conducted as a single case study with several sources of information. The result shows that these alternative sources of information works if the need for details are not very high, such as if the aim is a better understanding of the market. There is a problem with gathering data from this type of sources, it has already been analyzed by the people whoa re interviewed which prevents the basic analysis of the data. As a first step in a segmentation or user requirement study this way of gathering data is good. But as mentioned earlier if the need for details is high then the end users should be included.
