Abstract [en]

In the development of a new vehicle one must assure that the vehicle meets the design intent. Making ergonomic evaluations using people, test subjects, in a simulated vehicle workspace is a tool often used in the design process. If the test subjects’ seated position does not reflect the one in the complete car, one cannot trust the results made in the evaluation. This thesis investigates the differences in the way a person sits in a car compared to a simulated car environment, e.g. a physical model of a car or a car situated in a laboratory. Furthermore, it delivers recommendations on how to perform a physical experiment, a clinic, in a simulated car environment involving sitting, i.e. a guide to make test subjects position themselves in a manner that correlates to the seated position in a car in traffic. The document contains data on how people sit in a car in traffic, in a car situated in a laboratory and in a physical model of a car. The data is based on results from experiments made with a test population of twenty- eight test subjects. The recommendations for conducting clinics are based on test results and involve both intrinsic attributes, e.g. statistical predictions of the seated position, and elements that test subjects can affect themselves via input from the person conducting the clinic.
