During the winter in Sweden there is a big problem with the railroad, the majority of these problems is associated with snow and ice which prevent the switches to function properly. It requires the personnel to get there and manually get rid of the snow and ice from the switch, with some handy tools like brushes and knifes. The delays causes big problems for the passengers, contractors,companies and the society. The problem also cost alot, both direct and indirect charges, as thepassengers gets a lack of confidence for the railroad companies.The purpose of the project is through careful investigation, a thorough background study andappropriate methods get enough information to solve this problem. Today there is a whole bunch of different solutions for solving the problem, these solutions are investigated through an analysis to understand how other think about solving the problem, but also not to intrude on any patent.After the theoretical study, concepts were produced through creative methods to achieve the goal of many different ideas to choose between. Only one of these concepts could be further developed.After a lot of careful evaluations with known objective methods the concept would be chosen.After some research about components to use in the solution, some detail processing and further development the solution were ready to get onto paper. After some sketches on the design, further development were made, so that the components and details could fit together. A problem analysiswere made, and even more sketches drawn to get a pleasing result. Calculations and more detail analysis were made so that all pieces could be developed and put together in a CAD-model.The function of the final concept builds upon a vehicle which has a separate rail on the side of themain railroad. Through a hydraulic cylinder in the shape of a long shaft a small portable unit is sent out to the main rail to clean the switch. Let us call this portable unit the cleaning device for further appellation.The cleaning device are abutted on the main rail near the switch, through movement from thevehicle it therefore can move along the main rail over the switch, cleaning it in the process with 4 big brushes which is powered by 2 effective pneumatic motors. The brushes are big enough to get the ice and snow from all over the rail. In addition to the brushes there is 4 small air nozzles that blow out air in an incredible pressure to help the brushes to get rid of snow and ice from the switch.Both the pneumatic motor, air nozzles and the hydraulic cylinder shaft is powered by a strong electrical air compressor, which is situated in the vehicle on the seperate rail. Positioned on the vehicle is all the other components aswell. The components is a lithium battery with an isolationbox with small heat elements inside, which will, with the help of a thermostat, hold the battery in its suggested working temperature for best performance. The battery is chargeable, and when thevehicle docks on the station it will charge up. The compressors motor is driven by electrical power, powered by the battery. The battery also give power to two electrical engines, one of them has the purpose of driving the vehicle forward, through an axis with alignment to the frontwheels it is made possible. With inspiration from how train works, it nearly has the same kind of technique as the train. Except the power needed is much smaller with the small but effective electrical engine, so thebattery is the only power source needed.The other electrical engine have the purpose to power the elevator which is going to give altitude to the hydraulic shaft. The components is carefully chosen and evaluated based on theoretical background analysis and calculations. These evaluations helped me to chose the components and their dimensions.
