Mechanical properties of a clay contaminated by washing detergent, diesel or gasoline

Abstract [en]

The aim of this master thesis work was to improve the knowledge about the mechanical properties of contaminated Swedish soft clays. The main objective of this study was to investigate if different contaminants may have different effects on the mechanical behaviour of a clay. Laboratory tests have been conducted in order to evaluate values of shear strength and deformation for contaminated clay samples and not contaminated clay samples. The tested soil is a clay from the city of Norrköping and it is fairly representative of many Swedish soft clays. Two kinds of washing detergent (one powder and one liquid), diesel and gasoline have been used as contaminants. Results show that the undrained shear strength is significantly affected by contamination of the clay by the two washing detergents, and less affected or not affected by contamination by diesel and gasoline. Freezing and thawing significantly reduces the undrained shear strength of the clay samples contaminated by the two washing detergents. Compared to the values of the not contaminated clay, the deformations are larger for the samples contaminated by liquid detergent or diesel. The behaviour of the clay contaminated by washing powder depends on the applied pressure level. The compressibility of the clay samples contaminated by gasoline is approximately the same or slightly higher, compared to the not contaminated clay samples.
