Resistance to vertical shear of composite beams

Abstract [en]

This master thesis is a part of the ECSC supported project "Composite Bridges Design for short and medium spans". The aims of the project are to develop better rules for design of composite bridges and to make the concept more efficient in Europe and more attractive for short and medium spans. This work deals with shear buckling of rolled steel beams with stocky webs and made of high strength steel, S 460. The study included literature study, laboratory tests and analytical solutions according to Eurocode 3 Part 1.1 and Part 1.5 and Eurocode 4 Part 1.1. The aims of the study was to check if it is possible to use 0,7fyd as the maximum shear strength and to find out what influence the concrete slab will have on the resistance to vertical shear. The laboratory tests included two all steel beams and one composite beam. After the tests were performed it was quite clear that it is possible to use 0,7fyd as the maximum shear strength. The test also show that the concrete slab will not give any positive effect what so ever on the resistance to vertical shear
