A Web Service Architecture in Mobile Ad hoc Networks

Abstract [en]

This Master’s Thesis investigates the possibility to combine Web Services and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Web Services provide methods on how to distribute services over the Internet in a standardized way. In order to distribute services in a decentralized manner the peer-to-peer (P2P) model was adopted. JXTA, an open network platform for P2P computing, was chosen as P2P platform. With JXTA as starting-point, three obstacles have been identified during the working process: how to distribute Web Services using JXTA, how to deploy JXTA in mobile ad hoc networks and how JXTA is deployed in devices with limited resources. Two approaches in how to distribute Web Services using JXTA are presented. Three main issues are identified and discussed concerning the deployment of JXTA in MANETs. JXTA’s own solution to devices with limited resources is presented and restrictions with this solution are identified. The conclusion reached is that it is possible to combine the Web Services technology with the P2P technology, in this case JXTA. The mobility aspect, on the other hand, is an issue in JXTA since it was originally developed for fixed networks. This issue must be dealt with by JXTA in order to combine Web Services with MANETs using JXTA. However, we reached the conclusion that JXTA will work in mobile environments in a near future, since JXTA is continuously improved.
