Abstract [en]

Two communication technologies have become commonly used by the general public in recent years: cellular telephony and the Internet. These two technologies are beginning to merge. The Internet is going mobile. The rapid growth of mobile communication networks increases the need of management functionality, such as control and configuration, to make them more efficient. Ericsson develops a router which is targeted for use in the IP based Radio Access Network. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the feasibility of implementing Remote Monitoring (RMON) in the router and evaluate which parts of RMON that improves the existing management functionality. The alarm and event groups was deemed most useful and suitable for implementation. A prototype, containing these groups, was implemented to verify that it was possible to realize RMON functionality into the router. Several tests were done on the prototype to evaluate its performance and functionality. Those tests shows that it is possible to implement parts of RMON into the router. The interference with the routers forwarding capability is almost insignificant. When the router is overloaded and an extremely high polling frequency is used the packet loss is increased with 0.16%. When a more realistic polling frequency is used the disturbance is only 0.02%. The polling performance of the prototype is sufficient to fulfill the purpose of the alarm mechanism.
