Training of expatriates: case studies of four Swedish companies sending employees to China

Abstract [en]

The growth in international business has made the competition in the market place fiercer. This has lead to that many companies have started up business in foreign markets, often involving sending employees and their families abroad. For a successful expatriation, companies need to see the importance of cross-cultural training. We have studied four companies through case studies in order to describe how they train their employees for the expatriation. These companies are ABB AB, Boliden Contech AB, IKEA of Sweden AB and Sandvik AB. To draw deductive conclusions we have collected the empirical data in a qualitative way. This data have then been analyzed against selected theories, and between the companies. Our study shows that companies do train their employees and the families extensively and this mostly in accordance to theory.
