Development of an automated process for vehicle dynamics simulations in ADAMS/Car

In the car industry today virtual prototyping is becoming more and more important as the automotive industry strive to reduce lead times and costs. This master's thesis is focused on achieving an efficient and automated process to perform a virtual design loop including design of experiment and parameter study. At VCC a program called ADAMS/Car is used as an efficient tool for vehicle dynamic simulations. This program is an extensively used tool in modern product development. The virtual prototype can be tested in a similar environment, as the complete car will work in. To enable a more efficient use of resourses the already existant automatization was improved by giving the user the opportunity to use more than one assembly for each simulation. Then the process was extended so that the user can make a parameter study, for this a program developed by MSC and called ADAMS/Insight was used. This program can interact with other ADAMS products and lets the user design sophisticated experiments for measuring the performance of mechanical system models. It also provides a collection of statistical instruments for analysing results so that you can better understand how to refine and improve the model. The thought of using Insight was to create a test plan for which variables the user might want to change, for example dampers, tires and spring-stiffness. Making a parameter study using ADAMS/Insight was done using already defined variables in ADAMS/Insight. Variables that are not already defined are tires and dampers, their characteristicscan not be defined as a parameter value as they are built up with several different parameter values and defined in a property file. By making a symmetry relation the property files for tires and dampers could be changed, this made it possible to include them while performing a parameter study. Then ADAMS/Insight could be used to perform a parameter study on the tires and dampers. After making a parameter study with ADAMS/Insight the user can make an HTM-page which can be used to study the variations of the responses from the parameter study.
