Intra-domain Communication in the Quality of Service Agent Architecture

Abstract [en]

Internet of today is used by applications with different demands on the network. Research is done to develop support for service differentiation in the Internet and one approach currently under development is the quality of service agent architecture. The agent in this architecture needs a protocol to configure the quality of service mechanisms in the routers. The aim with the work is to study the requirements on this protocol and existing solutions. After this study, an implementation of one of the solutions is done to measure the performance. The study of requirements resulted in an interface that describes the functionality needed from the protocol and a decision to use SNMP in the implementation. The evaluation of the implementation showed that SNMP is possible to use for this purpose but has a few drawbacks. The main disadvantage is that it is not network friendly because it has no congestion avoidance mechanisms.
