Abstract [en]

The study was conducted in a small municipality in Norrbotten with about 17,000 inhabitants, where youth long-term unemployed have been investigated in order to describe and analyze the possibilities and opportunities young people have in their unemployment and how the act to get out of it. The analysis was based on the theoretical framework underlying the study, and the respondents' descriptions of their experiences regarding opportunities, conditions, cooperation with the employment service and their financial situation. The results show that young people perceive their situation as unemployed as both active and tense. They describe the active environment based on high standards, high self-control and good support, the tense environment is described by high demands, low self-control and low support. Factors that the youth experience as distressing is restlessness, that those who have jobs look down on them and that the health and wellness deteriorates. The possibilities that the respondents describe themselves having is to study, commute and/or move out of town. The limitations experienced by the respondents has a difference depending on their family situation, those adolescents who have family, children or a partner find it difficult to get from the town. Another limitation is experienced as a fear of losing the social contact network. The cooperation to the Employment Service is perceived generally as good, but there are opportunities for improvement in efforts to help young people to write their resumes and their cover letters where great difficulty is experienced. Furthermore, perceived a lack of guidance in the job search when the youth don´t know what or how they should highlight themselves in an eventual job interview with a potential employer. The economic stresses and lack of money is the most stressful factor. The fact that they in young adulthood are forced to be financially dependent on parents, family and their boyfriend felt difficult. Priorities among the expenditures is necessary to cope with the economic situation and unnecessary spending is unthinkable, which means that young people have to say no and abstain from things with friends and other amusements. The study shows that youth long-term unemployed are living in a vulnerable and stressful situation in which a connection to the previous research regarding illness exists, which should be important for the Employment Service to furthermore develop these ideas and keep in mind in working with and for youth. Keywords: Long-term unemployment, youth, opportunities, constraints, situation.
