Effect of nickel and silicon on the high temperature oxidation of stainless steels

Abstract [en]

In this study, the effect of nickel and silicon are investigated in 10 different stainless steel alloys, both commercial and experimental, at high temperature (700°C and 1000°C). The experiments involved are thermal oxidation and cyclic oxidation, at the two different temperatures of 700°C and 1000°C. All the samples were examinated by weight changes to calculate the amount of oxidation and estimate the depth of oxidation. Some samples were in addition examinated by GDOES (glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy) to observe the depth of penetration of the oxide. The oxides were analysed by SEM and X ray diffraction. Variations in nickel and silicon content allowed to estimate the effects of these two compounds on the high temperature behavior of stainless steels.
