Environmental friendly machining in bandsawing

Abstract [en]

The thesis was carried out at the "Kapteknik" (Cutting technology) department at Ovako Steel AB in Hällefors, Sweden. Two ways of lubricating bandsaw cutting have been compared. The current method: Wet lubrication uses a medium mixed with water to lubricate and to cool the cutting area with a large volume flow of fluid. The other method, Minimum quantity lubrication, MQL, is almost always semi synthetic oil that lubricates the cutting zone with a maximum flow of approximately 50ml/h. The most positive advantages when using MQL are: No disposal cost, no arrears on work pieces, tool and machine, no bacteria contamination and a clean work environment. Disadvantages are mainly a higher tool wear and a workpiece too hot to handle without gloves. The thesis intends to determine the tool wear difference between MQL and wet lubrication in bandsawing of through hardened bearing steel, so further conclusions can be established. The tests were carried out in a Jaespa bandsaw with a Håkansson PCV II ASP sawband. Twelve tube tests and four bar tests were carried out. After 1.96 m2 each test stopped and the tool wear was measured. The difference in tool wear between the two lubrication methods appeared at cutting speeds 55m/min and 60 m/min. At 40 m/min the difference in tool wear was small. The cutting differences between bar and tube, were defined. The bar showed higher tool wear compared to the tube at 55m/min. At 40 m/min the tool wear was almost the same. The difference will appear more at high speed due to the higher temperature, that need more lubrication and cooling. The bar had a longer cutting length and was due to that harder to lubricate. MQL will result in a higher machine and workpiece temperature. The tests show also that this temperature is not so high, that it affects the material properties. A vT analysis based on the tool wear data from the test, indicates that wet lubrication is the most efficient lubrication method, especially when the process is a bottleneck. MQL is the most environment and working environment friendly method and this has also to be considered when choosing lubrication method.
