Performance analysis on Intel Itanium

Abstract [en]

The Itanium" processor has about 200 measurable events. The counters that measure these events are very versatile. They can be set up to measure special details about every event. It is possible to count special instructions or instruction groups only, or to measure events only over an assigned threshold. All these different details are explained in the thesis. The main subject of this thesis is to measure and discuss the results obtained from CERN core programs dealing with calculating physics data. The thesis will also address issues with performance analysis. An introduction to the Itanium architecture is also included. The results look very promising for the IA-64 architecture. For example the SIXTRACK application that can be found in the SPEC2000 suite, obtains double performance at the same clock frequency on IA-64 compared to IA-32. The drawback this report shows is that the compilers are still not ready and there are even more performance to gain. The report also contains a comparison between different computers. Synthetic test cases has been made to show how programs can be tuned for memory performance. Not only the SIXTRACK application has been tested but a small overview over the FFT algorithm has also been included. Finally this thesis will explain the tool created to use the counters. The library marvin was created to automate and facilitate the measuring of applications. The development of performance tools for the IA-64 is ongoing and several improvements to the Linux kernel has been made since the project was completed. The work at CERN is part of the IA-64 Linux project formally known as the Trillian project. Important: All actual measurments were obtained on prototype hardware components (processor and platform) at this time.
