The composing guitarist
2016 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis describes the process of composing and performing my own music, with an emphasis on how I can grow as a performer on the guitar when I am myself the composer. I describe my process of composing and performing in three stages: the creator, the arranger, and the performer. The artistic part of this thesis has resulted in a new song cycle, written partly with inspiration from the music of Kurt Weill, and his way of writing for the guitar. I have written about the process of composing this music, reflected on practicing it; and also added a journal with detailed entries from the process. After recording the music, I analyzed the details from the performance, and as I was working with the song cycle, I also recorded separate songs for guitar, which I connected to the project of performing the song cycle. The result was that I developed my ways of practicing my own compositions, found shortcomings in the ways that I work as a composer and got further revelations on writing for the guitar in an ensemble, much thanks to the inspiration from the music of Weill.
