Abstract [en]

Annual measurements show that only 58% of those who live in nursing homes are satisfied with the treatment in the meetings with the personnel. The purpose of this study was to clarify the reasoning of healthcare personnel treating the elderly with dignity in the nursing homes.A purposive sample of 15 female healthcare personnel, without formal education in caring, aged from 18 to 65 years old, took part in the interviews as a group. The results were analyzed using a thematic content analysis. The analysis resulted in two themes; Dignified meeting is based on courtesy and respect and A dignified meeting is based on awareness of the older person. The personnel perception about a satisfactory meeting for the elderly is based on respect, confirmation and experience based on knowledge. For a meeting to be perceived well, the employees need to be prepared to notice the elderly and be able to get to know the elderly as an individual.KEYWORDS: meeting, dignity, healthcare personnel, experiences, nursing homes, elderly, focus groups interviews, thematic content analysis
