CORBA in an embedded system

Abstract [en]

The Operation and Maintenance Subsystem (OMS) on Ericsson's GSM Radio Base Station, RBS2000, is used for installing, configuring and supervising the base station. Data from the OMS is sent to a centre node of the network, i.e., the Base Station Controller (BSC), which controls several base stations. Communication between the base station and its controller is done over the ABIS interface, an internal Ericsson standard. The goal with this thesis is to implement and evaluate CORBA communication between the base station and the BSC. This is a part of Ericsson's goal to make the GSM network more flexible, and adapt it to Internet technologies. A CORBA system was designed and implemented on our test system consisting of a PC, acting as a BSC, and a base station. These two parts are connected to each other through a serial cable. As the base station has no support for IP, a proxy was implemented as a bridge between TCP/IP and the serial connection. The bridge forwards the CORBA messages from the PC to the base station. We found that CORBA was possible to implement in our test system. The Event Service specified in the CORBA standard takes care of the demands for alarm and fault signalling between the base station and its controller. One of the drawbacks with CORBA is increased network overhead in comparison to ABIS. This because ABIS is specialised for the GSM system while CORBA is a general technique. Finally we also conclude that CORBA is best suited for this kind of environment when compared with other techniques for distributed objects.
