Electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soils

Abstract [en]

An old wood preservation area, in Lundamo in South Tronderlag, Norway, is contaminated with CCA (copper, chromium, arsenic) and creosote. A new industry is planned to be established on this site. Before establishing a new industry the contaminated area must be cleaned up. This master thesis describes electrokinetic bench-scale experiments conducted on soil from the contaminated site at Lundamo. The CCA contaminated soil was treated with an electrokinetic method. Due to an error made by the chemical analyse company conducting the analyses, the initial metal contents of the soil were lower than the recommended guideline values. The result received from these experiments showed it is possible to remove metals even if the degree of contamination is low. However, at those low levels the remediation process is slow and the energy consumption is high. Soil contaminated with creosote (creosote contain of about 85 % PAH) was treated by biodegradation. In one test an electrical voltage was connected to the soil, and in two other tests rotten wood was added to the contaminated soil. These additions were made to control if biodegradation of PAH can be enhanced. The results showed that it is no use in adding rotten wood without analysing for fungi, which can degrade PAHs. The time expand of the tests was too short to notice degradation of PAHs in the soil, therefore no conclusions concerning the effect of adding voltage could be made.
