A bench scale evaluation of biological treatment of wastewater from a fatty amines plant

Abstract [en]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the capabilities of aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment technologies on the process wastewater generated at the Akzo Nobel amine plant in Morris, IL USA. Aerobic biological treatment was evaluated by conducting batch biological treatment studies. For each batch study four aerobic reactors were used. The reactors were charged with biological activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant treating a similar wastewater, spiked with a sample of wastewater and were then allowed to react for a 24-hour or 72- hour period under constant aeration. Two different wastewater streams from the plant and effluent from the anaerobic treatment study were evaluated. A total of five aerobic batch studies were conducted at the Morris plant in September, October and December 2001. Anaerobic biological treatment was evaluated by operating two 10-liter batch reactors. The reactors were charged with 5 liters of acclimated anaerobic sludge obtained from Hydroqual Inc and fed with wastewater from the plant on a daily basis. The two reactors were operated during a six-week period in September and October 2001. Parameters of concern in this study were chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, oil & grease content, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen as N, pH and, mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). Analysis of samples collected during the studies showed that the wastewater generated at the amine plant in Morris is biodegradable using aerobic or anaerobic treatment technologies. However, anaerobic treatment is not sufficient on its own to meet the treatment objectives. A preferable system would be a two-stage treatment system consisting of anaerobic treatment followed by aerobic treatment.
