Selective corrosion of duplex stainless steels

Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis has been to investigate under which conditions DSS (duplex stainless steels) are selectively corroded. By increasing the knowledge about selective corrosion of DSS, an increased understanding of the characteristics of thise materials is obtained, This will form a base for future materials selection and help in the interpretation of past and future corrosion features. The corrosion properties of the DSS, SAF 2304 and SAF 2507 have been investigated in different environments. The goal was to investigate in which environments selective corrosion occurs for these steels and which phase that corrodes in that environment. To accomplich thise some analyses with the EPMA (electron probe micro analyser) and the magnet balance were done , to investigate the two phases alloy content. Corrosion test were done in different environments and at different temperatures. All specimens were then checked in a light optical microscope and photographs were taken. Finally, an electrochemical corrosion test was done of SAF 2507. Potetiodynamical scans were done first, to decide at which potentials the potentiostatical weight loss measurement should be done. In most cases when selectively corrosion occured, the austenitic phase was corroded. But when chlorides were present corrosion often occured of both phases, but at different locations.
