Abstract [en]

This study aims to increase knowledge and understanding of how a middle manager is related to proximity and distance towards the employees. The study wants with the help of the managers' experiences to understand how managers construct a balance between closeness and distance in their relationships with employees. Five middle managers have been interviewed about their experiences of leadership. The empirical data were then analyzed based on Erving Goffman's dramaturgical perspective and Thomas J. Scheff's theory of social bond. The results of the study reported essentially what informants define as a close leadership and the importance of distancing in the relationship between manager and employee. What is also reported is how middle managers experiencing a problem around the head position. Close leadership is a prerequisite for creating trust and confidence toward our employees. Being friends with their employees during working hours is accepted, but to let an employee entering the private time is unthinkable among informants. When nearby becomes too large so tend relationship to become unstable, therefore the distance a necessary. The distance is maintained by having a clear and honest leadership, and also the outcome of a working team
