CAN-bus durability in radiation environment: with concern to Boden Rehabs Application

Today, electronical equipment in cars, robots and even electrical wheelchairs are becoming more and more advanced. For instance the CAN-bus is used to communicate between microcomputers in a wheelchair. But with sophisticated electronical equipment there is also a risk for disturbance from other electronical devices, such as a mobile phone. Such a disturbance can lead to malfunction of the electronic device, a wheelchair in this case. To increase the knowledge about electrical disturbances on the CAN-bus in a radiation environment this Master Thesis work was initialised in August 1999. Boden Rehab is implementing the CAN-bus in their applications, wheelchairs, and due to safety aspects they want to find out the effects of electrical disturbances on the CAN-bus. The results of this report are supposed to give guidance on how Boden Rehab should implement the CAN-bus in their wheelchairs. This report deals with the CAN standard and provides description of the demonstration system and results from different EMC tests. The demonstration system consists of a PC with a CAN communication hardware, software from LabVIEW and a CAN node developed by Boden Rehab. The PC and the CAN node, sends CAN specific messages between each other. The electrical disturbances are then radiated on the cable between the PC and the CAN node. The PC software, LabVIEW, then detects errors in transmission and the errors are recorded to a file for further evaluation. The experiments were done in order to establish what kind of cable, what transmission speed, and what kind of external protection would give the best results, small error rate, in Boden Rehabs application. Three different cables where used in the tests and the main parameter which was varied was the transmission speed of the bus. The results show that the CAN bus is suited for use in industrial applications and in vehicles. It is very resistant against radiated electrical fields and the emission test show very little emission. The ESD test show that the CAN bus is very dependent on communication speed to show god performance. It can also be stated that a serial bus is very hard to protect against ESD interference.
