IQ sample buffered rake for wideband CDMA receiver

Abstract [en]

The air interface in a mobile system is generally a hostile environment with a number of problems to overcome. One such problem is that each base station of a mobile telephone system must be able to transmit and receive data from several mobile phones at the same time. To obtain this an air interface multiple access scheme is used. For the third generation mobile system this scheme is called WCDMA. In the receiver of a WCDMA system the information is extracted in the Rake receiver. The assignment of my Master’s Thesis was to implement the IQ sample buffered Rake receiver and compare the used chip area to a parallel implementation of the Rake receiver. An estimation of the power consumption should also be done. The results from the simulations show that the specified functionality of the IQ sample buffered Rake receiver has been successfully implemented. The synthesis also shows that this implementation is an area effective solution compared to a parallel implementation when high bit rates are required. The major drawback of the IQ sample buffered Rake receiver is that it uses a large memory that consumes a significant amount of power.
