A study of the translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
2003 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Translation aims to give a fair picture of the original, both regarding style and context. This is the background of this study, which aims to see to what extent the translation of J.K Rowling's Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets agrees with the original and how it deviates from it. The study was carried out from a number of categories, that all are included in the terms Degree of cultural context adaptaion and Degree of language adaptation. The categories examined are for example proper names, additions, omissions, metaphors, idioms etc. The overall impression of the translation is that it in many aspects does give a fair picture of the original, at least when it comes to context. However, there is reason to be critical: stylistically the translation was found to deviate to a large extent from the original. This as a result of a large number of unmotivated additions, mistranslations and omissions. There were also many examples of inconsistency in eg. use if measures. These factors result in altering of the style and make the overall quality of the translation poorer.
