Abstract [en]

Overweight has been an increasing problem amongst the population in e.g. Sweden and USA. This has led to new demands on healthcare equipment. The equipment has to be adapted to handle the weight and size of overweight patients. A mobile patient lift is a device used to lift and transport persons sitting in a sling or on a stretcher. A typical usage scenario is to transfer a person from a bed to a wheelchair or a toilet. The goal of this master’s thesis has been to develop a new mobile patient lift that is designed to handle large patients. The lift should be able to lift 350kg and be uniquely easy to manoeuvre.The mobile lift was developed using the ”Ulrich & Eppinger”-product development process. The method has been used to investigate the customer needs, find solutions and evaluate concepts.The thesis resulted in a lift with a unique chassis design which makes the lift easy to control when moving and turning even when carrying a heavy patient. Measurements have showed that this chassis type requires up to 50% less force to manoeuvre than a conventional mobile patient lift chassis. The lift has dual pillars and beams which makes the lift strong and robust. Instead of a traditional leg spreading mechanism the lift has a unique sling bar positioning mechanism. The lift has a lifting capacity of 350kg and offers enough space to easily fit a large patient.
