Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns the new utilization of the Internet as a trade marketplace for exchange of physical goods and services: electronic commerce as proved to be one of the fastest growing new trends. Our main research questions concerned the characteristics of the buying behavior of indirect material, of buying organizations connected to an electronic marketplace in Sweden and Denmark. Further to be able to make an apposite comparison, the next research question concerned the issue of how these characteristics differed from the behavior of a buying organization not connected to an electronic marketplace. We have also searched for obstacles for businesses to take part and not to take part of an electronic marketplace. The study was made in case-form where LM Ericsson AB in Sweden and Novo Nordisk A/S in Denmark represented companies in use of an e-procurement system and Atlas Copco Tools AB in Sweden and Falck A/S in Denmark those not connected to an e-marketplace. Our Empirical findings where in essence: Ericsson thinks they can be helped in many different ways through an electronic marketplace. One thing is that their purchase process can be rationalized, their “red flow” transactions and maverick spending decreased as well as establishing better control of the number of suppliers. There is essentially only one main reason for Atlas Copco not using an electronic marketplace and that is immaturity of the purchasing organization and they are aware of the need for a change. Atlas Copco has in the nearest future thought of buying via an electronic marketplace, however that would preferably be in collaboration with their present suppliers. One of the goals for Novo Nordisk will be to cut down the supplier base. One other important reason for Novo to enter the cooperation with IBX was a wish to arrange and define all suppliers and products into catalogued product range, but also to gain and facilitate information gathering. The company claims to already have distinguished some financial savings but above all, they predict the major financial gains within next year. Besides not believing an e-procurement solution to be profitable yet, Falck, in total, do not consider the organisation being mature enough to take the step over into the electronic trade market, such as e-procurement systems, and EDB systems etc.
