Digital decoding of scrambled audio transmissions

Abstract [en]

This thesis is a part of a bigger project in cooperation with the government organization Taltidningsnämnden. Taltidningsnämnden is responsible for the publication of speech-newspapers for the visually impaired. Daily newspapers are transmitted every night through the Swedish radio channel P1. The transmissions are scrambled so that only the subscribers with their special receivers can interpret them. The goal of the project was to investigate a receiver using digital technology to replace the current analog receivers. The current receiver uses cassette tapes as storage and was designed in the early eighties. The biggest issue with the current receiver is that it is expensive to repair and fails often because of the many moving parts in the cassette mechanism. This paper investigates different ways to descramble the transmissions and a thoroughly examination of one of them. Presented here is a method to descramble the received signal asynchronously and an implementation using an Analog Devices 2191 Digital Signal Processor.
