TEAPOT: Ticket-based Electronic Authentication Providing Online Ticket exchange
2004 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This report covers the work of the authors, Fredrik Jonsson and Lars-Erik Wessman done as their master thesis project at Luleå University of technology in the second half of 2003. The TEAPOT project covers automatic ticket based authentication and on-line exchange of tickets. The philosophy of TEAPOT is fundamentally different from the philosophies of other authentication systems. TEAPOT focuses on authenticating a user's reason to use the network rather than the actual identity of the user him/herself. This allows for very flexible access control mechanisms and scalability. Also, TEAPOT provides automatic user authentication and on-line acquirement of network access credentials, which is claimed by the authors to increase the overall usability of the system. TEAPOT is based on a previous project named AEA - Automatic Electronic Authentication. TEAPOT aims to pick up where AEA left off and continue evolving the authentication system into a product that can be put to use in existing systems. It improves the system and implements new features that were never considered for AEA. This report analyses the work that has been done during the TEAPOT project as well as the AEA project, and introduces the TEAPOT advanced prototype system. It also discusses the important role of TEAPOT as an authentication system in a new wireless environment.
