Abstract [en]

Ambulance nurses are trained to care for seriously ill and injured patients in ambulance care and the number of patients cared for prehospital tends to increase. It is not common that paramedics are faced with caring for their own relatives with acute illness in ambulance, but it is something that all ambulance personnel may face when it is not possible to opt out emergency ambulance services. The aim of this study was to describe Ambulance nurses experiences caring for their own relatives. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews with six ambulance nurses in three ambulance stations in northern Sweden. The interviews were analyzed with thematic content analysis and resulted in one theme; To do much more or much less and four categories; disregard from treatment and prior protocols; feel more like relatives than professional; affected by stress and anxiety; to be present and give support. As an ambulance nurse caring for their own relative were strenuous and stressful and it appeared that the ambulance nurses partly forgot about their own role as a nurse and were first and foremost relatives. The conclusion shows the need for more education and knowledge to the ambulance nurses will be able to handle the situation and improve the care for the patient/family and have a greater readiness to deal with the feelings that the situation entails.
